Scar
/ Mole Removal:
MOLES:
Moles are smooth skin growths that may be flat or
elevated and red-, brown-, or skin-colored. They may
be present at birth or early childhood (congenital
moles) or may develop in early adulthood (acquired
moles).
REMOVAL OF MOLES
Some moles of the face give an unacceptable class="STYLEONE" appearance,
even with make up. Moles can be raised or flat. Apart
from cosmetic disfigurement, some moles have to be
removed too for medical reasons. This surgery is usually
done as an outpatient under local anesthesia.
Elevated moles can be removed surgically, either by
excising the mole or by shaving it flush with the plane
of the surrounding skin. They can also be ablated (evaporated)
using a carbon dioxide or erbium YAG laser if there
is no concern for melanoma. Flat brown moles can also
be excised or treated with a number of lasers to decrease
or remove the brown pigmentation of the mole. This
last method generally requires more than one treatment.
CORRECTION OF WHITE SPOTS OF THE SKIN
White
area's or spots of the skin can occur without any
reason or after an injury or burns. These areas
can be camouflaged by tattooing them with skin colored
pigments. They can be corrected permanently by very
thin split skin grafting & making the area raw
or by punch grafting. This procedure is done under
local or general anesthesia as an out patient without
any stay at the hospital. Sometimes you may
require more than one sitting to get a satisfactory
result. Tattooing or grafting is not done until the
white spots are stable class="STYLEONE" and fixed inside. The color
of the tattoo may gradually fade with time, but this
can be corrected by adding some pigment in the lesion
later.
SCAR REVISION
When the skin continuity is broken by a cut , surgery
or injury , the body forms scar tissues to unite the
cut ends. The amount of scarring depends on the persons
age, heredity factors, race, and the type, direction,
depth, size and location of the wound. When a scar
is removed a new scar is formed by the body in its
place. Thus So a scar cannot be removed - it can only
be revised. By surgery, many scars can be improved
upon in their appearance , or the amount of scar reduced,
or disfigurement minimized. Scar correction operation
is not undertaken until the original scars have fully
matured which is usually six months after the first
operation. There are rare exceptions to this rule.
There are also scars that cannot be improved upon by
surgery. Most scar revision procedures are done under
local or general anesthesia and do not require hospitalization
TREATMENTS:
Moles must be carefully evaluated by a qualified physician
to ascertain any concern for melanoma. Worrisome moles
must be biopsied to rule out melanoma. These biopsies
are considered medically necessary and are thus covered
by medical insurance. Removal of large, disfiguring
congenital moles, or of any mole that becomes irritated
due to repeated friction or trauma (beard area, scalp,
bra-line) is also ofte n covered by medical insurance.
However, cosmetic removal of moles is not covered by
insurance.
RECOVERY:
Recovery time is minimal; most people can get right
back to work after a treatment session. Collagen treatment
also requires minimal recovery time. For the more aggressive
treatments, post-operative care will be quite eventful
and may include treated areas remaining pink for a
month and some major swelling. These techniques require
much greater preparation as a patient. With proper
preparation and follow-up care, a patient can get back
to work after about two weeks and will be able to apply
makeup after two and a half to three weeks, with pigmentation
normalizing in about two to three months.
EFFECTS
OF TREATMENT :
Improvements via laser abrasion and dermabrasion are
permanent and can give dramatic results compared to
the more mild treatments. However, realistic expectations
must be maintained. Repeat treatment can be performed
after one year. Collagen injections are only temporary
and must be repeated every three to six months to maintain
the improvement. It often requires two to three treatment
sessions to reach an optimal result.
